Medicare Education Remains Critical

One of the first topics discussed was a recent survey showing that while many Medicare beneficiaries believe they understand Medicare, far fewer can accurately identify and explain the core parts of the program and their coverage options. Ronnie James emphasized that confidence does not always equal understanding, making education one of the agent’s most important responsibilities.

He encourages agents to bring a copy of the Medicare & You handbook to appointments or have the digital version readily available. Using official Medicare resources can help validate information, support recommendations, and build credibility with clients.

Rather than assuming beneficiaries fully understand enrollment periods, penalties, or coverage structures, agents should take the time to confirm understanding and provide education before diving into plan recommendations.

Healthcare Pricing Transparency Changes

Ronnie highlighted new federal efforts designed to improve healthcare pricing transparency. Regulators are working to make healthcare pricing information more standardized and accessible, allowing consumers to better understand their costs and compare providers.

These changes are continuing to develop. In the meantime, agents should be prepared for more questions surrounding healthcare costs, provider pricing, and affordability. Greater transparency could ultimately help beneficiaries make more informed decisions while giving agents another opportunity to provide guidance and education.

Local Agents Still Have an Advantage

A significant portion of the call centered on the continued growth of national call centers and organizations. As large telesales operations continue to expand, some agents have expressed concern about increased competition.

However, Ronnie reminded attendees that local agents possess something many national organizations cannot replicate: community presence, local market knowledge, and ongoing personal service.

When clients need assistance after enrollment, they often value being able to reach the same trusted person who helped them initially. By remaining active in their communities and focusing on long-term relationships, agents can continue strengthening their competitive advantage.

His advice was simple: think local, stay visible, and continue building trust through service and referrals.

Consumers Are Researching Medicare With AI

Another emerging trend discussed during Office Hours was the increasing use of artificial intelligence among Medicare beneficiaries. According to industry reports, some consumers are turning to AI tools to research Medicare Advantage plans and gather information before meeting with an agent.

This trend reinforces the importance of understanding plan details and being able to clearly explain recommendations. Consumers are arriving at appointments more informed, but they still need personalized advice tailored to their individual healthcare needs and circumstances.

Remember that while technology can provide information, it cannot replace the experience, service, and local expertise agents bring to the enrollment process.

SCAN Health Continues Expanding

While many Medicare Advantage carriers are reducing service areas, exiting counties, or managing growth more aggressively, Ronnie highlighted SCAN Health as a carrier taking a different approach. The organization continues expanding into new markets and pursuing strategic partnerships with well-known consumer brands.

Although SCAN may not currently be a major player in many markets, its growth demonstrates that opportunities still exist within Medicare Advantage for agent growth.

Agents should stay alert to market developments and Tidewater will provide more information as it comes.

Humana HRA & Member Activation Updates

Kristi Bell shared an actionable update about Humana’s Member Activation Initiative (MAI) requirements. Agents who completed their standard Humana certification earlier in the year may still need to complete the additional MAI certification.

Key reminders include:

  • Additional certification is required
  • Assessments apply to both SNP and non-SNP enrollments
  • Eligible completed assessments can generate compensation opportunities
  • Assessments must be recorded
  • Agents have 10 days from application submission to complete the requriements

Tidewater agents using IntegrityCONNECT should remember that after submitting a Humana application, they can access the Member Activation and HRA workflow through the “Explore Opportunities” section.

Member Experience Is Becoming a Priority

Throughout the call, Ronnie repeatedly emphasized that carriers are focusing heavily on member retention, satisfaction, and onboarding quality. Recent industry studies show that Medicare Advantage satisfaction scores have declined, prompting carriers to place greater importance on the member experience.

As a result, carriers are increasingly tracking items such as:

  • Health risk assessment completion
  • Member engagement
  • Care coordination
  • Retention metrics
  • Compliance indicators

The industry’s focus has shifted from maximizing enrollment volume to ensuring beneficiaries are enrolled in the right plans and have a positive experience after enrollment.

Medicare Advantage Changes and Enrollment Caps

This AEP may bring more disruption than agents have experienced in recent years. Several major carriers are reducing Medicare Advantage footprints, eliminating products, or limiting growth. CMS has also allowed carriers to establish enrollment caps on certain plans.

Because of these changes, agents should:

  • Closely monitor carrier communications
  • Stay aware of product changes
  • Be prepared with alternative solutions
  • Familiarize themselves with regional carriers in their markets

With millions of beneficiaries potentially needing to select new coverage due to product discontinuations and service area reductions, agents who stay informed will be best positioned to help clients navigate changes.

Part D Changes Mean More Client Conversations

Prescription drug coverage continues to evolve, and agents should prepare for more conversations surrounding Part D plans this year. Ronnie noted that many beneficiaries are experiencing fewer plan options and higher premiums as carriers respond to changing market conditions.

Clients may have questions related to:

  • Premium increases
  • Prescription drug affordability
  • Formulary changes
  • Deductibles
  • Alternative plan options

Helping beneficiaries understand these changes will be an important part of the enrollment conversation.

Client Education Matters Beyond Enrollment

Agents are often viewed as trusted advisors, and Ronnie encouraged agents to use that influence to help clients make better healthcare decisions throughout the year.

One example discussed during the call was educating beneficiaries on the appropriate use of urgent care facilities versus emergency rooms. As wait times increase in many markets, helping clients understand where and when to seek care can potentially improve outcomes and reduce unnecessary costs.

Simple conversations around preventive care, primary care usage, and timely treatment can create significant value for clients beyond enrollment season.

Healthcare providers continue shifting more procedures to outpatient surgical centers, creating additional considerations when comparing Medicare Advantage plans. Ronnie encouraged agents to pay close attention to outpatient surgery copays and benefits when reviewing options with clients.

This trend also highlights the value of ancillary products. Certain hospital indemnity plans can help offset outpatient surgery expenses and other healthcare costs that may become increasingly relevant as healthcare delivery changes.

Don’t Overlook Hospital Indemnity Opportunities

Medicare Advantage plans continue adjusting benefits and cost-sharing structures, which is yet another reason to not overlook ancillary products like hospital indemnity plans. These plans provide a valuable way to protect clients from unexpected healthcare costs.

Hospital Indemnity solutions can address:

  • Inpatient hospital expenses
  • Outpatient surgery costs
  • Prescription-related benefits
  • Home healthcare benefits
  • Additional cost-sharing exposure

Bonus Opportunity: Liberty Bankers

Agents writing qualifying hospital indemnity business with Liberty Bankers may be eligible for bonus compensation through December 31. Higher production levels unlock larger per-application bonus payments, making this an opportunity worth reviewing during AEP.

Product Update: Heartland

Heartland recently introduced a new hospital indemnity product that includes guaranteed issue opportunities for certain age groups, as well as option prescription reimbursement and home healthcare riders.

Medicare Payment Update

Ronnie also addressed questions surrounding the recently announced $90 Medicare payment. He clarified that not all Medicare beneficiaries will qualify and encouraged agents to be prepared for questions from clients as information continues to circulate.

Being able to provide accurate information and clear expectations can help reduce confusion while reinforcing an agent’s role as a trusted resource.

For agents writing Medicare Supplement policies, several trends are emerging. While Plan G remains the most widely selected option, Plan N is gaining momentum as beneficiaries look for ways to balance coverage and affordability.

Industry data discussed during the call showed growing interest in Plan N, making it increasingly important for agents to understand and confidently present both solutions to clients thoroughly.

Ronnie also highlighted developments from Physicians Mutual, including a newer integrated Plan G offering designed to appeal to healthy beneficiaries seeking additional wellness-oriented value.

IntegrityCONNECT Continues to Expand

Several exciting updates were also shared about new enhancements in IntegrityCONNECT!

Practical Sales Calls with AI-Powered Feedback

Agents can now participate in simulated sales conversations and receive scores and feedback designed to help improve their phone sales skills and presentation techniques.

Easier Access to CSG

CSG is now accessible through the Health Tools section of IntegrityCONNECT, making quoting tools easier to locate.

ACA is Now Available

One of the largest platform updates is the addition of ACA within IntegrityCONNECT. Agents can now manage ACA business alongside Medicare Advantage, Supplement, life insurance, and other lines of business in one centralized platform.

ACA Market Updates

The ACA market is experiencing changes. Ronnie discussed recent actions affecting participation in the Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM), as well as broader compliance efforts to address fraudulent enrollments and marketplace abuse.

At the same time, several carriers continue pursuing expansion opportunities, creating new market possibilities for agents working in ACA throughout select states and counties.

Compliance Reminder

As the session came to a close, Ronnie offered an important compliance reminder for agents working across multiple lines of business. Medicare appointments should remain focused on Medicare-related discussions and should not be converted into life insurance appointments during the same meeting.

While agents may make clients aware that they offer life insurance products and services, follow-up conversations should be handled appropriately and in accordance with CMS guidelines. Staying mindful of these requirements can help agents remain compliant throughout AEP.

Final Thoughts

October’s Office Hours delivered a message for agents entering the busiest season of the year: stay informed, stay compliant, and stay focused on serving your clients well. From evolving Medicare Advantage markets and new carrier requirements to ancillary sales opportunities, technology enhancements, and changing consumer behavior, the industry continues to evolve quickly.

The good news? Agents who prioritize education, embrace available tools, and focus on delivering value will continue to stand out. As Ronnie reminded attendees throughout the session, preparation and adaptability are two of the most valuable assets an agent can bring into AEP.

We’ll see you at next month’s Office Hours to discuss how AEP is unfolding, share industry updates, and help you stay informed on carrier news, compliance, and sales opportunities.
